Book Review: Kill For Me Kill For You by Steve Cavanagh
Genre: Psychological Thriller / Revenge Thriller Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5 Stars)
Two mothers. Both lost their daughters to murder. Both failed by the justice system. So they made a deal. I will kill yours if you kill mine.
Kill For Me Kill For You by Steve Cavanagh is one of the most compelling thrillers I have read this year and it came out of nowhere. 4.5 out of 5 stars and a detective character who might be my favorite I have encountered in the entire genre this year. Let me tell you why.
The Premise
This book operates across multiple perspectives and each one adds a completely different layer to an already deeply compelling story.
Amanda lost her daughter to murder. Her husband blamed himself so completely that he took his own life not long after. Left with nothing but grief and rage Amanda starts stalking her daughter’s killer looking for some version of justice the system refused to give her. She gets caught. She gets slapped with a lawsuit. The wall goes up and there is nowhere left to turn.
Wendy lost her daughter to their teacher. The same devastating loss. The same broken system. The same wall of nowhere to go and no one listening.
These two women find each other at a grief support group and make a decision that changes everything. Since the justice system will not give their families what they deserve they are going to take matters into their own hands. By killing for each other.
The Third Perspective
Woven throughout Amanda and Wendy’s story is a third perspective following a woman named Ruth who survived a home invasion by a serial killer known only as Blue Eyes. Ruth’s storyline adds a completely different kind of tension to the book and connects to the larger story in ways that I genuinely did not anticipate going in.
The three perspectives work together in a way that keeps the story moving even when one thread is developing more slowly than the others. Steve Cavanagh manages the balance between them with real skill.
Detective Farrow: My Favorite Character in the Book
I need to talk about Detective Farrow because he completely stole this book for me.
In a story this dark and this heavy Farrow is the unexpected emotional anchor. The way he handles his interactions with Amanda throughout the investigation is so careful and so warm and so genuinely human that it added a layer to this story I was not expecting and completely loved.
He is not a larger than life detective. He is not flashy or dramatic. He is just deeply decent. He shows up for Amanda in the middle of all this darkness with a kind of patience and care that stands in sharp contrast to everything else happening around him and that contrast is what makes him so memorable.
In a thriller full of revenge, grief, and moral complexity Farrow is the heart of the story. And I did not see that coming.
My Honest Take on the Pacing
The first third of this book is a slow burn and I want to be upfront about that. Steve Cavanagh is building these characters and their worlds carefully and there are stretches in the early section where the pace slows enough that you notice it.
Push through. The payoff is absolutely worth every slow page.
When this book picks up it does not stop. The twists are solid and I genuinely did not see them coming. The ending ties everything together cleanly without leaving holes which is something a lot of thrillers with this many moving parts fail to do.
My one honest note is that when you finally learn who the murderer is and how it all comes together I would have liked just a little more in that final moment. It resolved well. It just could have hit even harder given everything that came before it.
Final Verdict
Kill For Me Kill For You is a dark, emotionally complex revenge thriller with multiple perspectives that all earn their place, twists that land cleanly, and a detective character who will stay with you long after you finish the last page. Steve Cavanagh is now firmly on my forever YES author list.
