A new author earns his place on the shelf immediately. John Marrs writes psychological thrillers with a moral complexity that feels genuinely different from what is trending in the genre right now. The characters in this book are messy and human in a way that makes the concealment at the center of the story hit harder than a standard thriller setup would allow. A confident debut read from an author I will absolutely be returning to.
The Inmate by Freida McFadden | 3.5 out of 5
This is the honest conversation this series was built for. Freida McFadden is the author who gave me reading back after my TBI. She is exceptional. And this particular book is not her strongest work. The premise is compelling and the atmosphere works but the payoff does not arrive with the same force her best books deliver. If you are new to her start with Never Lie or The Housemaid. Come back to this one once you know what she is capable of at her best.
Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica | 4.5 out of 5
The biggest surprise of the volume and the most significant rating jump in this series. Mary Kubica rated 3.5 in Volume 2. This one rates 4.5. Same author. Completely different experience. Local Woman Missing is Kubica at her best and the book that made me glad I gave her another chance. The structure is exceptional, the pacing builds with real momentum, and the emotional payoff is earned in a way her previous read was not. If you almost wrote her off the first time this is the one that changes your mind.
When I Kill You by BA Paris | 3.5 out of 5
The most structurally unusual book in this volume. BA Paris does something genuinely bold here that most thriller writers would not attempt. The execution is uneven in places but the ambition is real and there are moments in this book that linger in a way that a lot of safer thrillers do not. Full thoughts in the episode including exactly who this book is and is not for.
The shelf keeps growing. Volume 3 adds two new authors, raises important questions about catalog consistency, and delivers one of the most pleasant surprises in the series so far. The full unfiltered episode is live now with everything I could not say here without giving it away.
