Genre: Psychological Thriller / Gothic Suspense Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars)
Alice Feeney has been called the queen of twists. Beautiful Ugly is exactly why that title is earned.
I went into this book knowing Alice Feeney had a reputation. BookTok has been talking about her for a long time and the word twist gets thrown around so much in this community that it has almost lost its meaning. I was cautiously optimistic. I did not want to be let down by hype again.
I was not let down. Five stars. And that twist made me put the book down and just sit there in silence.
The Setup
Beautiful Ugly follows Grady Green, an author whose wife Abby vanishes without a trace from a desolate cliffside road one night. No explanation. No warning. Just gone.
A year later Grady has not written a single word. His grief has swallowed him completely and his career is falling apart alongside everything else. His agent makes a decision for him, she sends him to the Isle of Amberly. A tiny isolated island meant to give him space to heal and find his writing again.
What he finds instead is an island that feels wrong in a way he cannot quite name. The locals are secretive. The atmosphere is suffocating. There is a claustrophobic quality to the place that makes it feel like the island itself is closing in around him. And then things start happening that Grady cannot explain, things that make him question his own grip on reality and force him to confront the possibility that Abby’s disappearance is not what it appeared to be.
What Alice Feeney Does Differently
The gothic atmosphere in this book is something else entirely. Alice Feeney uses the Isle of Amberly the way the best atmospheric thriller writers use their settings, not as a backdrop but as an active presence in the story. The isolation, the secrecy of the locals, the way the island seems to have its own agenda — all of it creates a reading environment that keeps you on edge from the very first chapter.
But what sets Beautiful Ugly apart from other atmospheric thrillers is the way Feeney controls information. She is giving you everything you need to understand what is happening. Every clue is on the page. Every detail is placed with intention. And you will still not see how it all fits together until the exact moment she wants you to.
That is not luck. That is craft at an elite level.
That Twist
I am not going to spoil it. I am not even going to hint at it beyond what I have already said.
What I will tell you is this, I put the book down after the twist and just sat there. Not because I was confused. Not because it felt cheap or manufactured. But because it reframed everything I had read in a way that was so complete and so well constructed that I needed a moment to let it settle.
The best thriller twists do not just shock you. They make you feel like the story could not have ended any other way and yet you never saw it coming. Beautiful Ugly does exactly that. Alice Feeney earned every bit of her reputation with this one.
Final Verdict
Beautiful Ugly is my first 5 star read from Alice Feeney. The atmosphere is unmatched, the pacing is tight, the setting feels alive, and the twist is the kind that stays with you long after you close the cover. If you have been on the fence about Alice Feeney this is your sign to get off it.
Read to the end. Trust the process. And clear your schedule for the day because you will not be putting this one down.
