5 Freida McFadden Books That Will Mess With Your Head (Twists I Did NOT See Coming)

I’ve read a lot of thrillers. A lot. But every now and then, an author comes along who makes you feel like you’ve never read a thriller in your life, because they break every rule you thought you knew about how the story was going to go. Freida McFadden is that author for me.

A #1 New York Times bestselling author (and fun fact, a practicing physician specializing in brain injury), McFadden has published over 30 books and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. She’s BookTok royalty, a Goodreads Choice Award winner, and the reason I have officially given up on predicting plot twists.

Below are my personal top 5 Freida McFadden books that genuinely messed with my head. I’m talking jaw-on-the-floor, had-to-reread-the-last-chapter, called-my-friend-at-midnight moments. No spoilers, just enough to get you dangerously close to a one-click purchase.

#5 — The Surrogate Mother

A couple desperate for a baby after years of failed fertility treatments finally gets an offer that seems too good to be true, their personal assistant Monica volunteers to carry their child. But Monica is not who she says she is, and the secrets she’s hiding are darker than anyone could have imagined.

McFadden does something brilliant her, she makes you deeply uncomfortable with a situation that starts out feeling hopeful. The slow unraveling of who Monica really is had me reading faster and faster until I couldn’t put it down.

⚡ Twist Level: “The moment it clicked, everything hit differently.”

#4 — The Teacher

High school math teacher Eve appears to live a completely normal life, until a student-teacher affair scandal rocks Caseham High. At the center is Addie, a troubled student with a dangerous reputation. But as Eve digs deeper, she realizes nothing is as it seems, and trusting the wrong person could be deadly.

The web of secrets, manipulation, and revenge McFadden weaves here is some of her best work. I genuinely did not see where this one was going until it was too late. The ending completely got me.

⚡ Twist Level: “Had to put the book down and stare at the wall.”

#3 — Dear Debbie

This one is different from McFadden’s usual format, and that’s exactly what makes it so unsettling. What starts as something seemingly innocent turns into a slow-burn psychological spiral that reminds you why you never fully trust a narrator in a McFadden book.

Debbie truly is a BADDIE she handles her business like no other. This book really will make you think one way but the double twist at the end left me so surprised.

⚡ Twist Level: “Don’t mess with an unhinged woman…you won’t make it out alive.”

#2 — Never Lie

A couple snowed in at a remote bed and breakfast. A collection of old therapy session tapes from a patient who disappeared decades ago. And the further our protagonist listens, the more she realizes the past and present are colliding in terrifying ways.

Never Lie is a masterclass in building dread slowly and then detonating it all at once. The dual timeline format works perfectly, and McFadden uses the unreliable narrator device better here than almost anywhere else in her catalog. This one haunted me for days.

⚡ Twist Level: “Can’t even trust your therapist”

#1 — The Housemaid 👑

Goodreads Rating: 4.28 ★ | 180,000+ Reviews

Millie Calloway is homeless, has a criminal record, and lands a job as a housekeeper for the wealthy Winchester family, a fresh start she desperately needs. But as she settles into their stunning home, she realizes something is deeply, deeply wrong. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous things become.

There is a reason this book has over 180,000 Goodreads reviews. There is a reason Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried signed on to star in the film adaptation. It is the perfect psychological thriller, propulsive, atmospheric, rich in character, and built on a twist that redefines everything you thought you read.

If you read only one Freida McFadden book, start here. Then immediately buy the rest.

⚡ Twist Level: “Life-changing. Dramatic? Perhaps. Accurate? Absolutely.”

Final Thoughts

Freida McFadden writes thrillers the way they’re meant to be written, with characters you actually care about, tension that never lets up, and endings that make you question everything that came before. Whether you start with The Housemaid or dive into Never Lie, just know that your weekend plans are officially cancelled.
