Dear Debbie by Frieda McFadden
Some books start fast and hook you immediately.
This one… takes its time.
And honestly? I almost gave up in the first 100 pages.
I felt confused. A little skeptical. Wondering where the story was going and why it felt so slow.
But then everything shifted. And once it did, the twists didn’t stop.
First Impressions
At the beginning, Dear Debbie feels quiet and almost mundane. You’re just getting to know Debbie, her life, her job, her struggling marriage.
Nothing feels dramatic yet. But that slow build? It’s intentional. Because once the pieces start clicking, you realize every small detail mattered.
Who Is Debbie?
Debbie is such an interesting main character.
She went to MIT but never graduated.
She’s clearly brilliant, observant, and capable of so much more.
Yet somehow, she ends up writing an advice column.
You can feel it from the start. There’s more to her than what we’re seeing. She’s too smart. Too calculated. Too aware. She has secrets. And the deeper you go into the story, you realize something else.
Everyone else does too. Every person Debbie encounters has a story. And something they’re hiding.
When Things Start Turning
About a third of the way through, everything changes. The twists start stacking. One after another. Every time I thought I understood what was happening, the story flipped again.
And what I loved most was watching Debbie slowly start handling her business in ways you don’t expect.
Bold. Strategic. A little wild. But honestly? Kind of iconic. She’s not passive. She’s not helpless. She moves with intention. Debbie is a baddie.
And seeing everything come together the way it does by the end felt incredibly satisfying.
What This Book Really Nails
This story really drives home one big theme for me. You truly cannot judge a book by its cover. No pun intended.
Not the people in Debbie’s life.
Not Debbie herself.
And definitely not this book.
What looks simple at first ends up being layered, strategic, and way deeper than you think.
My Rating
⭐️ 9 out of 10
Yes, the beginning is slow. But once it picks up, it’s classic Frieda McFadden chaos in the best way. Twisty. Smart. Entertaining. And impossible to put down by the end.
Final Thoughts
If you’re someone who loves psychological thrillers with:
- multiple twists
- morally gray characters
- secrets everywhere
- and a strong, clever female lead
This one is absolutely worth the read.
It might test your patience at first… but trust me. Stick with it.
The payoff is worth it.
