The Chapter I’m In: Ranking My First 5 Books by Frieda McFadden

Lately, my evenings have looked a little different.

Less rushing.
Less scrolling.
More slowing down with a book in my hands.

Reading has quietly become part of my reset. A way to unplug, be present, and give my brain something fun and immersive that isn’t work related.

Over the past few weeks, I dove into my first five books by Frieda McFadden and honestly… she might be my new favorite psychological thriller author.

Here’s how they ranked for me and what each one felt like during this chapter of my life.

1️⃣ The Housemaid

This one completely hooked me and set the bar high. The tension builds quickly, the twists feel sharp, and I remember finishing chapters saying “just one more” until it was way past bedtime. It’s fast paced without being overwhelming, which made it such an easy escape at the end of long days. During this season of slowing down, this felt like pure entertainment and a reminder that rest can also look like getting lost in a story.

2️⃣ Never Lie

Never Lie is layered and clever in a way that keeps your mind working the entire time. Every detail feels intentional, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story flips again. I loved how simple the chapters were to read while still keeping the suspense high. It felt like the perfect balance between light enough to unwind with but engaging enough to keep me fully present.

3️⃣ Dear Debbie

This one surprised me the most. The first 100 pages were slower and had me questioning where it was going, but once the twists started, they did not stop. Debbie is such a strong, strategic main character, and watching everything come together felt incredibly satisfying. It reminds you to never judge a book by it’s cover because everyone has secrets.

4️⃣ The Tenant

The Tenant started off steady and detail heavy, but those details end up being exactly what makes the twists hit so hard later. I flew through this one in two days because once it clicks, you are locked in. It’s one of those stories that teaches you to pay attention and trust the process. Kind of like life, not everything makes sense at first, but it all connects in the end.

5️⃣ The Crash

This one felt the most grounded and realistic. The situation felt relatable and human, with tension that slowly builds rather than explodes. It still had great turns and surprises, but it read more like a slow burn than an edge of your seat thriller. Honestly, it paired well with this chapter of my life where I’m leaning into steadiness and simplicity over constant intensity.

Why These Books Fit The Chapter I’m In

Right now, I’m choosing slower evenings.

More balance.
More intentional downtime.
More things that feel good instead of productive.

These books became part of that ritual.

Reading isn’t just entertainment for me lately. It’s how I unplug, reset my nervous system, and give myself space to just be.

And if a thriller can keep me off my phone and fully immersed for hours, that’s a win.
