šŸ“– The Chapter I’m In: Week 5 Colleen Hoover Woman Down

I went into this one with mixed expectations.

Part curiosity.
Part loyalty.
Part wanting to support an author who has clearly been through a lot.

And honestly, more than anything, I was just glad to see Colleen Hoover writing again.

After everything she’s navigated publicly with her books, adaptations, and personal challenges, I was just glad she found her voice in her books

First Impressions

Right away, the story felt very real.

Not over the top.
Not overly dramatic.
Just grounded and human.

There were moments that almost mirrored real life experiences she’s had with her own work and movie adaptations, which made parts of the story feel personal and reflective in a way I wasn’t expecting.

It felt less like fiction and more like something lived in.

Is It a Thriller?

This is where I think expectations matter. I kept seeing this labeled as a ā€œthrillerā€ and compared to Verity. And honestly… I wouldn’t put it in that category at all.

There are definitely moments of suspense and a few surprising turns that keep things interesting. But if you’re expecting heart racing, edge of your seat, can’t put it down tension like Verity, this isn’t that.

Nothing really compares to Verity. That book kind of lives in its own lane.

Woman, Down feels more like a slow burn, character driven story with a few twists sprinkled in, rather than a true psychological thriller.

What Worked

What I appreciated most was the realism.

The emotions felt authentic.
The characters felt believable.
The situations didn’t feel forced just to shock you.

It was interesting enough to keep me reading and wanting to know what happened next, even if it wasn’t intensely suspenseful.

What Didn’t Work for Me

Some of the chapters felt long.

There were moments where I thought certain scenes could have been tightened up or summed up quicker to keep the pacing moving.

At times, it dragged a bit more than I would have liked.

My Rating

āļø 6.5 out of 10

Not my favorite Colleen Hoover read, but still worth picking up if you enjoy her storytelling style and want something more grounded and reflective rather than high intensity.

The Chapter I’m In

Right now, I’m drawn to books that feel human and honest. Stories that don’t need to be loud or dramatic to matter.

This one felt like that.

Not explosive.
Not shocking.
Just real.

And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Final Thoughts

If you go into Woman, Down expecting another Verity, you might be disappointed. But if you let it be its own story, there’s still a lot to appreciate.
